Req Number 36884BR Job Title Assistant Animal Technician Job Code and Payroll Title 9526: TECHNICIAN, ANIMAL, ASST Job Code and Payroll Title 9526 TECHNICIAN, ANIMAL, ASST Location All UCSF and affiliate Animal housing locations Department Name Laboratory Animal Resources Center Work Days Sat-Wed 7:30am - 4:30pm Shift Days Shift Length 8 Hours Job Summary The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) supports the research programs of the faculty by providing all services associated with the care and use of laboratory animals including the purchasing/receiving, daily care and monitoring of the health of all species. The Assistant Animal Technician is an entry level position wherein the incumbent provides facility support services including operation of equipment (i.e. autoclaves, cage-washers, water dispensers) and cleaning regimens (cages, racks, and, storage areas) and learns to care for animals as required by applicable laws and regulations. Duties include cleaning cages, racks, and cage accessories, loading tunnel or rack washers, filling cages with bedding, proper disposal of waste, tracking equipment inventory, operation of autoclaves and other facility related equipment. Incumbent may participate in on-the-job training programs to learn about proper care and handling of research animals including delivering food and water in accordance to established procedures, maintaining equipment and animal housing areas according to standard operating procedures and federal and state regulations. Perform record keeping duties such as per-diems records, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt and disposition logs,perform computer related duties/assignments and perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Graduation from high school or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position; ability to learn feeding, caging, and space requirements for all species for laboratory animals; comprehend written orders and agency regulations, walk, waist twisting, crawling, ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surface for up to 7 hours/day; ability to push and pull heavy objects and ability to safely move and or lift heavy loads; ability to push and pull heavy objects up to 31-60 pounds and ability to safely move and or lift heavy loads; carrying/lifting 20 pounds; fine finger manipulation, gross manipulation, simple grasp/ power grasp; repetitive movements of upper and lower extremities; use of protective equipment, may be exposed to chemicals or toxic substances; dust, fumes, or gases, gerprinting and background check required. Preferred Qualifications Learn federal and other licensing agencies' regulations; skill to distinguish between sick and normal animals, normal and abnormal behavior; prior animal handling experience.
