This position makes original contributions to research projects and publishes research. Moreover, this position impacts operations and direction of analysis and management of research and/or clinical trials within the division. In addition to the consulting and collaboration functions, this position is responsible for recruiting, training, mentoring, and supervising statistical analysts and bioanalysts on one or more teams providing statistical or bioinformatics support throughout the institution. KEY FUNCTIONS ' Consulting and Collaboration o Carries out complex analyses and interpretation of data independently or in collaboration with faculty. Collaborates on a broad range of pre-clinical, clinical or biomedical research projects, including but not limited to projects related to analysis of large data sets, design of clinical trials, health services research projects, bioinformatics and computerized image analysis. o Uses existing literature, computers, oral and written consultation, and own knowledge to consult or collaborate independently with biostatisticians, bioinformaticists, clinicians, or basic scientists on clinical trials or cancer research projects for one or more departments throughout the institution. o Communicates effectively with clinicians, basic scientists, principal investigators and other team members both orally and in writing. o Manages the conduct of the drop-in statistical or bioinformatics clinic. o Makes original contributions to research projects and takes initiative in professional activities. o Independently attends project meetings with collaborators. o Presents findings at professional group meetings (both inside and outside of the institution) for reporting results of statistical, bioinformatical, or biomedical research.. In the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, may be additionally responsible for the following functions: Provides consulting and multivariate analysis for genomic and proteomic data. Understands molecular biomarkers and bio-signatures that can then be incorporated into clinical trials for 'personalization' of medicine. The bio-interpretive components of the challenge involve molecular ontologies, pathways, and networks, whereas the biostatistical components typically involve highly multivariate analyses. Supports biomedical research projects to be designed, analyzed, and biologically interpreted using technologies such as microarrays for expression of mRNAs, microRNAs, proteins, and epigenetic markers; microarrays for CGH and SNP analysis; bead-based multiplexed assays; ultra-high throughput sequencing; mass spectrometry at the protein and small molecule levels; RNAi pharmacology studies; and others. Supports MDACC departments' participation in large NCI projects including but not limited to caBIG, CGEMS, and TCGA. ' Statistical and/or Bioinformatics Reporting o Prepares technical reports, manuscripts and grant applications for investigators independently. o Presents findings at professional group meetings (both inside and outside of the institution) for reporting results of statistical, bioinformatical, or biomedical research. o Publishes collaborative research. ' Training o Participates in training, mentoring and supervision of statistical and/or bioanalysts. ' Leadership o Leads team(s) of analysts who collaboratively support pre-clinical, clinical or biomedical research projects for various departments throughout the institution. Responsibilities include but not limited to recruiting, training, mentoring, and supervising analysts on team(s). o Delegates duties to junior statistical analysts and/or bioanalysts. ' Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION Required: Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Biology or related field. Preferred: Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Biology or related field.
EXPERIENCE Required: Five years of management or supervisory experience with ten years experience with mainframe and/or PC databases, document processing, and statistical or bioinformatics software in a biostatistics, bioinformatics or related field. Preferred: Five years of management or supervisory experience ten years technical experience within a hospital, academic, private sector, or state environment.
