Charge Master Specialist
This position is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (DCH Regional Medical Center)
Charge Master Specialist develops, maintains, and reports on the Charge Description Master (CDM); ensures data integrity between the Charge Description Master and the hospital departments' files; researches coding and revenue reporting requirements; utilizes strategic pricing applications to maximize reimbursements within hospital budget guidelines.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
Serves as a key member of the Finance Division to insure Charge Description Master and all related processes are current and compliant with federal, state and carrier requirements.
Works with department managers to insure charging protocols are current and accurately reflect services provided within their department.
Assures accuracy of CPT codes, HCPCS codes and revenue codes within the Charge Master.
Coordinates to alert departments of changes in Medicare and Medicaid regulations that impact charging, billing and reimbursement. Provides education as needed to departments related to their charges and charging practices.
Ensures compliance standards are met by providing routine audits of hospital services. Coordinates with ancillary departments to provide resources and appropriate reporting for identification of potential Medicare billing errors. Assists Patient Accounting staff with resolution of all payer denials.
Maintains an understanding of all feeder systems that relate to charging. Provides price estimates on procedures or services to potential customers and physician offices.
Provides necessary education and training for staff.
Coordinates with other organizational leadership members to assure revenue cycle is effective and efficient.
Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor Degree in Business, Accounting or Health Management or equivalent experience required.
3-5 years of previous Business Office experience in an acute setting required.
Knowledge of system tables and profiles, which are used to direct transaction activities of subsidiary systems to other applications systems. Examples of such systems include but are not limited to billing, OE, EDM, Meditech dictionaries, Florida Shared System, Al Medicaid web portal, materials management etc.
Knowledgeable of payment methods of Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer contracts.
Knowledge of Federal and State Medicare/Medicaid laws and commercial Third Party payer regulations. Knowledge of DRG's, APC's Grouper software, Relative Weight tables, and conversion factors.
Knowledge of healthcare payment systems including principles of contracting with both governmental agencies and commercial insurance companies.
Technical and professional skills in hospital accounting principles and practices, including the chart of accounts used by hospitals.
Technical skills and knowledge in management reporting, report writing and the understanding of how information interrelates with the hospital general ledger.
Skilled in the use of personal computers for spreadsheet, charting and presentations.
Ability to organized and plan work tasks over several weeks, prioritizing assignments. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to understand and follow somewhat complex verbal and written instructions.
