Here at WakeMed, our Pathology department offers comprehensive laboratory services in the areas of anatomic pathology, core laboratories and special testing laboratories with anywhere from 3-4 million specimens processed annually., collects specimens on all age populations as assigned with minimal patient impact. Responsible for verification of proper patient identification. Utilizes requisite equipment, instruments and computer systems to perform job functions as needed. Performs specified procedures within the scope of established testing methods and responsibilities. The Clinical Services Technician (Phlebotomist) is responsible for the proper collection of blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary puncture on all age populations. Responsible for 100% verification of patient and sample identification. Monitors patients for negative reactions and takes appropriate measures to allay patient anxiety. May be required to perform special testing such as glucose tolerance collection, ionotophoresis (sweat collection) and Electrocardiograms. Ability to utilize various computer systems and all venipuncture equipment in order to perform daily job functions. These functions may include order entry, workload monitoring and distribution. Ability to communicate and interact with patients, visitors, nursing and medical staff in a professional manner. Adheres to all safety regulations and departmental policy, procedure and protocol. Ability to troubleshoot problems in the absence of management staff.
Experience Requirements :
One year phlebotomy experience or successful completion of a structured phlebotomy program required.
Education Requirements :
Graduation from high school or GED curriculum required.
