Consulting Hardware Engineer
Consulting Electrical Engineer Position Overview Responsible for electrical engineering analysis, design, implementation, verification - for real-time, embedded, microprocessor-based safety-critical on-board train control systems and related products. Design, document, implement, debug, and test safety critical hardware for real-time microprocessor-based embedded systems according to generally accepted design and testing standards and techniques Participate actively in design reviews Develop and refine system and hardware requirements with internal and external customers. Perform requirements capture and specification; feasibility, concept proving and prototyping activities. Work with software engineers to isolate HW/SW issues Use configuration management tools to control hardware design development and changes Coordinate with other engineers to ensure that delivered products are fit-for-use. Team lead for less experienced engineers on specific projects in the development of hardware and system development. Analyze hardware requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. Ensure an effective interface between hardware performance and software design and other aspects of product development. Propose and implement new technology, process improvements, and conceptual ideas for future product designs. Maintain legacy designs. Measures for Success: Demonstrate excellent analysis, design, and verification skills to ensure hardware meets business requirements. Follow established guidelines and procedures to ensure technical standards are met according to company and regulatory standards. Apply new concepts to develop and demonstrate technical competence. Work well independently and as part of team demonstrating support for team decisions to ensure consistency in product design. Take initiative as problems and opportunities arise by anticipating and meeting customer needs and company expectations. Communicate technical and complex concepts to ensure that they are well understood. Responsible for outcomes including overcoming obstacles and meeting project deadlines to ensure customer expectations are achieved. Make recommendations at a high level on system design and platform development. Act as a role model and adviser to junior engineers to facilitate learning, consistency, and technical depth of the team. Technical Competencies Bachelors degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related degree. Minimum of 8-10 years of experience developing hardware for real-time, safety critical embedded systems Minimum of 8-10 years of experience with a full product life cycle from concept, requirements capture, through design, implementation and testing phases. Strong knowledge and experience analog and digital circuit design for real-time, safety critical, microprocessor-based embedded systems. Knowledge of embedded hardware with an ability to read hardware schematics and understand microprocessor I/O and electrical concepts. Experience with circuit simulation and schematic capture tools. Familiarity with performing formal testing/integration, including hardware testing and integration testing of hardware and software as well as creating and executing system test procedures. Experience developing functional, clean, and well documented schematics. Experience developing RS-232, RS-4xx, and SPI communication links hardware Experience with version control systems Experience using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, in-circuit emulators, logic analyzers, real-time debuggers, multi-meters, and other lab equipment. Microsoft Word, Excel and Project proficiency. High degree of commitment, initiative, flexibility and attention to detail. Must have good verbal and written communications skills Must be able to work in a team environment Knowledge of rail / transit industry a plus
