Warner Bros. Television is in search of a Director, Music to manage the creative staff and service the music needs of the WBTV and Warner Horizon Television produced television series, MFTs, and mini-series from a creative, budgetary, and administrative standpoint. This position works closely with the other functional areas of the music department, interfaces with all departments within WBTV and WHT and represents the music department by acting as a liaison between the department and the shows.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
* Manage the creative staff and manage their day-to-day issues as they pertain to various activities on the shows (song pitches, on-camera musical appearances, pre-record sessions, music research, special requests made by producers). Staff includes Music Manager, Music Contracting Manager, and two Music Coordinators.
* Responsible for developing the sound/musical style of the shows in coordination with producers.
* Research and evaluate new musical artists. Pitch recording artists, musical acts and songs for shows and producers. View all video cuts for assigned shows and submit creative music ideas accordingly.
* Maintains close contact with music point person on the show to contribute creative concepts, supervise playbacks on stage and resolve mixing issues related to music.
* Distributes current musical releases to producers and pitches/places songs to picture.
* Hires vocalists and musicians for the shows according to SAG and AFM guidelines and rates.
* Regularly review each assigned episodic and pilot script(s), call sheets and production schedules to anticipate and ensure music needs are met. Works with the producers to interpret music needs, in order to create suggestions of songs and musical acts. Notify Manager of Music Contracting of any on-camera needs. Notifies Music Clearance of songs to be used by the shows.
* Track the lock date for composer issues and the mix date for licensed music. Ensure music point person on each show has appropriate music as well as alternates of cleared music to anticipate possible replacement needs.
* Supervise pre-records and scoring sessions.
* Negotiates fees and secures recording studios and sound mixers. Coordinates all logistical and budgetary aspects of scoring and recording sessions.
* Liaison with producers, composers, and stages in order to facilitate smooth activities relative to Music.
* Responsible for interfacing with the independent music supervisors and determining the status of musical issues on each supervised show. Intervenes on issues beyond the scope of the supervisors.
* Oversees and ensures external Music Supervisors follow studio policies and procedures and fulfills all union requirements. (e.g. hiring on and off camera musicians/singers), etc.
* Oversees the preparation of budgets for new pilots, series and returning shows.
* Schedules and prepares budgets for music related elements. Monitors budgets for assigned shows and clarifies discrepancies on a timely basis.
* Strategically maneuvers through difficult situations with the producers and/or networks so that creative integrity is preserved, overages are avoided, appropriate approvals are obtained, crises are averted, appropriate funds are allocated, and the Company is protected from any legal or union/guild claims.
* Responsible for delegating and evaluating the work-load of the creative staff and distributing shows, pilots and other projects accordingly.
* Responsible for staying abreast of music issues surrounding New Media opportunities (iTunes and other digital downloading, internet streaming, mobisodes, etc.) and explore ways to further integrate music into the Company's marketing campaigns.
* Interfaces with writers, musicians, contractors, and singers who perform the services of a songwriter or lyricist in order to obtain information pertinent to Certificates of Authorship.
* Assists in the processing of all New-Use Phonograph Claims in coordination with Licensing and the Manager of Music Contracting.
* Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
* Bachelor's degree preferred. High School graduate of equivalent.
* Production experience in the entertainment industry especially desirable.
* TV/Music Production experience preferred.
* Must be able to work on several tasks simultaneously. - especially diverse tasks incorporating creative and budgetary issues.
* Ability to accurately estimate, create and revise budgets.
* Ability to meet deadlines when under pressure and while maintaining accuracy.
* Ability to work with minimal supervision, to set own priorities and track deadlines.
* Ability to handle confidential information.
* Experience with AFM and SAG preferable.
* 5 years in the Music business, 3 years in film or TV production and 2 years managing a creative team.
* Diverse musical knowledge.
* Knowledge of AFM and SAG regulations and rates.
* Computer proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Extra and Outlook.
* Must have the ability to create and work with budgets.
