Job Description
The Genetic Counselor supports clinical practice and education in the area of human/clinical genetics under the direct clinical supervision of a Physician. Supervision most commonly includes a Board Certified Clinical Geneticist and/or Maternal Fetal Medicine Physician. This position primarily provides support to all Intermountain Maternal-Fetal Medicine Centers through coordinating specialized medical care, prenatal and postnatal, for the high-risk genetic prenatal diagnosis patient and her offspring. The Genetic Counselor provides education to the physician and the patient regarding current technology options, testing recommendations, possible outcomes, and detailed information in the rapidly progressing field of genetics. The incumbent will also provide genetic counseling to other patients/families within the Women and Children's service line as time and situation warrant.
Applicant will assist in development of genetic counselor support for cancer services, attend and actively participate in tumor board care coordination meetings and will facilitate accurate and appropriate genetic testing and interpretation. This includes coordination with physician, patient, and clinical or research laboratories. Conducts appropriate follow-up education and communication with other health providers, patients and their families. This position will also assist in the training/teaching of health providers about clinical cancer genetics.
This position is a regional position that will support both Cancer Services and Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Must be able to attend weekly board meeting held on Wednesday mornings from 7am-8am.
Shift: 32 hours/week, normal business hours 8:30am-5pm
Pay Rate:$24.26-$36.40
Minimum Requirements
- Masters of Science degree in Genetic Counseling
- Certification, or eligible for certification, as a genetic counselor by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
- The incumbent must be licensed (full/provisional) or license eligible by the Utah Department of Professional Licensing
- Extensive knowledge of the latest developments in human genetics and the principles, practices, and techniques of genetic counseling
- Must have the ability to review the scientific literature and produce relevant publications
- Excellent interpersonal communications and counseling skills including the ability to interpret ultrasound and laboratory findings and discuss them with the patient in layman's terms
- Must be able to work as a member of a team as well as with little or no supervision
- Must be detail-oriented
- Basic computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in direct patient care and genetic counseling
- Experience in research coordination and design
