HELPER, AIRCRAFT TRADES CFS/IDIQ IH1G
Description Employee will be assigned to a specific shop within the depot that performs various processes to achieve the overhaul and repair of helicopters. Purpose of the assignment will be to perform common and typical tasks of work within the shop to which assigned and to assist the journeyman and higher-graded trades-persons. Typical duties may involve various aspects of disassembly, cleaning, lubrication or assembly of aircraft parts, components, or subassemblies; preparing aircraft parts for test, preservation, painting, storage or containerization; checking items for obvious wear, cracks, nicks, burrs, or other surface defects; using equipment, solvents, brushes, buffers, scouring pads to clean or sand surfaces; replacing plugs, nuts, gaskets, safety wiring; inserting fittings; lifting, carrying and holding materials in position during assembly or fabrication processes; using templates to cut materials; fastening parts together by using bolts, rivets, and screws; taking measurements; tagging, sorting or binning material/parts; cleaning work areas and lubricating shop equipment. Assignments typically require using various production shop equipment, hand tools, measuring devices, and power tools.
Assignments may also involve performing more difficult work/tasks under close supervision. Usually, the employee will be assigned to assist one or more journeyman/higher graded trades person in the shop who works with and/or instructs the employee. Aptitude and interest to learn trade theories and practices; including reliability and dependability. Ability to work safely and with dexterity in an industrial environment where safety of the people is a consideration as well as quality of the product so that it does not cause accidents. Ability to work with others as a team. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions in a shop to complete work assignments. Ability to read, understand and follow written technical instructions. Ability to use, or aptitude to learn to use, a variety of hand tools, power tools, power equipment and measuring instruments. Ability to handle materials and items of various weight and do manual work requiring moderate physical exertion, such as walking, standing, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
Assignments and specific instructions are provided by the supervisor or a higher graded worker. As experience is gained in the routine, common tasks in the shop, the employee works with more independence, but the supervisory or higher graded worker is available to answer questions and resolve problems. Detailed instructions are provided on new assignments along with close supervision and detailed review. Work is checked in progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions, quality of workmanship, and rate of production. The employee is responsible for following all safety procedures and for using appropriate personal protection equipment to include checking protective devices for proper operation. If the employee is assigned more difficult tasks, they are performed under guidance of higher-grade employee and subject to spot checks and final review.
The work requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, stretch, and reach. Climbing on aircraft structures, or work platforms, may also be required. Assignments may also require working in hard-to-reach places, and in awkward/strained positions for prolonged periods, or inside aircraft fuselages or aircraft fuel cells. Frequently required to lift and handle items weighing up to 35 pounds without assistance. When required to lift objects weighing in excess of 35 pounds, employee will obtain assistance of others or use mechanical handling equipment. The employee may be required to climb steps and ladders and stand on slippery or inclined surfaces.
Assignments may require working in industrial shops that are well-lighted and ventilated, in damp/draft hangars, or on flight lines, which may involve moderate risk and discomfort from inclement weather and limited space in/around aircraft. Requires standing on concrete or composition floors for long periods of time. Is frequently exposed to grease and solvents, to noise from drills and hammers, and to the possibility of cuts, burns, strains or abrasions. May be exposed to fumes, disagreeable odors, and various chemicals. Required to wear safety shoes and safety glasses and may be required to wear respirators, aprons, goggles or other protective clothing and other personal protective equipment. Working conditions have been considered in the evaluation of this position.
