Job Duties:
Perform routine HLT I duties in Clinical Microbiology Lab. Major duties include accession and culture specimens for isolation of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Separate and distribute specimens for Parasitology, AFB, Virology, and Bacteriology. Centrifuge, separate, and freeze (-20) serum specimens for Specimens for Special Antimicrobial Lab. Accession and inoculate specimens to appropriate media for Virology according to established UCLA protocols. Centrifufuge and aliquot specimens for Immunoserology and Brentwood Chemistry. Contact physicians and nurses via telephone to resolve problems/special handling requests for clinical specimens and proper methods of ordering tests. Prepare work area daily including set up and disinfection of biological safety cabinet and maintenance of adequate working supply of media, pipettes, swabs, etc. Rotate and discard refrigerated specimen holds. Inoculate microdilution MICs using Dynatech 2000 Inoculator. Answer phone. Perform data entry and retrieval. Monitoring inventories of media and reagents. Maintain laboratory equipment. Perform troubleshooting specimen/test order problems, filing, and participate in special studies as required by the laboratory and the medical staff. Ensure all work is performed properly and in a timely manner. On a daily basis, assess overall workload for any area that needs help and help co-workers without being reassigned by the supervisor.
Job Qualifications:
The following are required: working knowledge of Clinical Microbiology techniques and procedures. Knowledge of anatomic specimen sites. Able to differentiate various types of microbiological media and to determine if the media is contaminated or substandard prior to inoculation. Able to determine optimal growth conditions when processing a clinical specimen in order to maximize the recovery of clinically significant bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Working knowledge of lab safety protocols. Able to maintain a clean, organized work area. Able to maintain awareness of lab media and reagent needs. Able to assess accuracy and reasonableness of specimen requests. Able to respond to necessary changes in schedule with cooperation. Skill in using aseptic technique in working with bacteria. Skill in organizing and setting priorities which accurately reflect relative importance of tasks and responsibilities. Able to perform with frequent interruptions. Able to work independently and follow through on assignments. Skill in reading and comprehending scientific or general procedures or protocols in standard English text, such as instrument manuals, procedure manuals, safety manuals, etc. Able to record written information legibly and accurately. Skill in speaking on a one-to-one basis using appropriate vocabulary and grammar (English) to obtain or give information, explain procedures, teach, etc. Able to work cooperatively as a member of a team and to promote teamwork in others. Able to work standing, walking, or sitting for extended time periods. Able to perform repetitive tasks.
