Description Laboratory Technician Summary: Performs a limited number of lab tests and workflow functions of a basic nature in one lab division (ie , Surgical Path, Hematology or Micro) by SOP, performs quality control, preventive maintenance, and reviews results for clerical accuracy, under the direct supervision of a licensed Laboratory Technologist or Supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned. TECHNICAL SKILLS 1.0 Accepts and promptly prepares specimens in order to perform in an efficient manner, basic diagnostic procedures (i.e., blood cell counts, urine macroscopics, electrolytes, bleeding times, routine culture setup, gram stain setup) designed to contribute to the production of accurate reproducible results to meet the needs of patients, as required by the medical staff. 1.1 Follows standard operating procedures developed to produce accurate reproducible results. 1.2 Operates limited laboratory equipment/instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing, consistent with standard operating policies and procedures, and manufacturer's instruction manuals. 1.3 Prepares, reagents and solutions required to complete specimen processing and testing according to the standard operating policies and procedures. 1.4 Refers medical and technical problems to a medical technologist. 1.5 Maintains all records accurately, neatly and legibly in ink (unless otherwise required)(i.e., review of worksheets, chart reports). 1.6 Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by the laboratory standard operating procedures. 1.7 Performs clerical duties as needed. QUALITY ASSURANCE 2.0 Performs limited quality control procedures under the supervision of a medical technologist on a predetermined schedule, to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation in order to assure timely accurate reproducible test results insuring quality patient care. 2.1 Performs routine maintenance and quality control of basic laboratory equipment/instrumentation as directed by the laboratory standard operating policies and procedures within the predetermined time schedule. 2.2 Reports test results manually or via computer, under the direct supervision of a medical technologist, with limited errors as defined PRODUCTIVITY 3.0 Utilizes time, materials and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency. 3.1 Minimizes waste of time, materials and resources. 3.2 Promptly prepares patient specimens, to reduce wastage, unnecessary requests for additional specimens, and undue delays in results reporting, in accordance with the standard operating policies and procedures. 3.3 Completes assigned workload within established turnaround times by adjusting organization of work according to test ordering status (e.g., routine, STAT, ASAP, emergency), (e.g., daily monitoring, turnaround time studies). COMMUNICATION SKILLS 4.0 Maintains effective communication with laboratory divisions and sections, other hospital departments and patients/public, as necessary, to assure dissemination of information and the identification of problems in support of the hospital's mission of patient care. 4.1 Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, identifying self and unit. 4.2 Effectively and in a timely manner communicates test results to the health care team. 4.3 Communicates all appropriate information to patients necessary for their understanding of a procedure before, during and after designated procedure. 4.4 Effectively communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual service needs of patients. 4.5 Refers to medical technologist, supervisor and/or medical director, medical and technical problems, and unusual patient data and results. EDUCATION 5.0 Participates in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the hospital, laboratory and the university in support of the hospital's mission of patient care, teaching, and research. 5.1 Participates, as required, in the training, of new employees, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist). 5.2 Participates in the technical instruction of all assigned residents and students of the School of Medicine Medical and other healthcare professionals, as established by laboratory policies (eg. Laboratory objectives, evaluation forms). Position Requirements Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED, is preferred, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Licensed as a Point of Care Technician in the state of West Virginia if performing moderately complex testing
