SUMMARY:
Function: Performs a variety of analytical clinical tests, procedures and administrative activities in the clinical laboratories.

Scope: Impacts clinical tests, procedures and administrative activities in a clinical laboratory.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Perform duties in accordance with special projects which include collecting and accurately recording data about patients on clinical studies.
2. Collecting, processing, handling, and storage of specimen from patients on various clinical studies in a safe and timely manner.
3. Perform molecular and immunological testing on collected patient specimens.
4. Perform routine transfusion tests such as serological testing: ABO and Rh typing.
5. Operation and maintenance of various laboratory instruments.
6. Prepare various laboratory reagents and conduct experiments.
7. Performing duties in accordance with instructed methods under the direction of the principal investigator or designee.
8. Adhere to institutional and regulatory guidelines by entering data into a data collection system, either by writing on forms devised for this purpose or entering into computer.

Other Functions:
1. Walk from one area to another throughout MDACC to deliver and pick up information and laboratory samples as needed.
2. Instruction: Conducts close work with and instructs other technicians, students, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists, and staff members in scientific protocols currently used. The above requires strong communication skills, patience, and a good working knowledge of the necessary equipment.
3. Library: Read and understand scientific articles about new procedures as required to tissue culture and other experiments conducted. Library work requires good reading and comprehension skills as well as diligence and patience.
4. Supplies: Monitors work flow as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance and stock solutions. These also need planning of resources and storing the supplies in the right temperature.
5. Seminars: Participates in section seminar series and also attend work-related seminars.
EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree with major course work in one of the basic sciences.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: None. May substitute required education degree with a combination of additional years of equivalent experience or completed college credit on a one to one basis.

Preferred: Two years experience in scientific or laboratory work.
