hundreds of global citizens to work on collaborative development projects in more than 20 countries in Africa,

Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. We are one of North America's leading international development

ABOUT THE PARTNER VSO Ethiopia has developed a five years program area plan with a focus of improving child and maternal health

by bridging the shortage of skilled human power with a motto of 'Sharing Skills: Changing Lives'. To this end,

VSO Ethiopia in collaboration with UNICEF have developed a project and identified teaching hospitals as

strategic partners to support the realization of national targets in the area of maternal and child health.

Arba Minch Health Science Center has high enrollment but is lacking in the number of instructors/lecturers and

the quality of the training they are providing. This placement is, therefore, developed to reduce the mentioned

challenges by facilitating knowledge sharing and skill transfer to reduce the incidents of maternal and child

mortality.

THE VOLUNTEER'S ROLE
• Assist the teaching hospitals in establishing or strengthening neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at their

hospitals

• Assist the Regional Health Bureau (RHB) in establishing NICUs at other key non-teaching hospitals as per

request

• Assist the universities in providing quality pediatric and neonatal health education to undergraduate as well as

postgraduate students



• Assist RHBs and Universities in establishing standard pediatric and neonatal care and service delivery

guidelines

• Assist the Universities in conducting essential pediatric health research with focus on neonatal health

• Assist the teaching hospitals in quality pediatric and neonatal care service delivery as time permits

• Assist in the basic emergency obstetric care trainings being conducted at these hospitals in every stage of the

training

• Assist in the maternal and neonatal health service provision at these hospitals as much as time permits

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Doctor of Medicine (MD)

• Certificate of Specialty or equivalent post graduate Clinical Training in Pediatric and Child Health

• A minimum of two years of experience as a specialist in pediatrics and child health at a hospital level

• Preferably prior experience in clinical teaching

TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a modest but

healthy lifestyle while you volunteer abroad. This includes:

• Attendance at a Cuso International assessment day (candidates are expected to cover the first $150 of

the most cost-effective travel expenses and accommodation costs).

• Travel and accommodation costs associated with five day pre-departure training course held in Ottawa.

• Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the case of a family emergency).

• Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and health insurance.

• Accommodation while overseas.

• A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country where you are placed.

• Quarterly payments to support you in your placement.

• Modest support for accompanying partners.
