Research assistants offer questionnaires, consent patients, and offer HIV tests; they also extract data from medical records.
The work takes place in a busy emergency department and involves working directly with both patients and staff, including both doctors and especially nurses; the research deals with HIV and applicants must feel comfortable discussing HIV, and the behaviors that put one at risk of infection, with patients in this setting; further, the patient population at SFGH in the emergency department is quite diverse in many respects and includes a good proportion of patients from vulnerable populations such as the homeless and the mentally ill; and perform other duties as e: This position has an end date of September 2012. There are four openings for this position. Required Qualifications BA/BS in psychology or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; experience as a research coordinator or research assistant with clinical research studies; applicants must feel comfortable discussing HIV, and the behaviors that put one at risk of infection, with patients in this setting; applicants must feel comfortable working with a diverse and vulnerable population; knowledge of ethical principles and federal and state regulations governing the participation of human subjects in biomedical research; working knowledge of behavioral science, psychology and research design; ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills to effectively work with other research and administrative support staff; ability to determine workload priorities in an appropriate way to accomplish tasks or goals, and anticipate and solve potential problems; prioritize and meet deadlines in a dependable and timely fashion; work well and communicate effectively with adolescent and adult research subjects; proficiency to effectively use personal computer and software such as Word, Excel, and various Electronic Data Capture programs; good verbal and written communication skills to effectively work with physicians, patients and families, clinical staff, and other health care professionals; organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining accurate, retrievable records; accurate and precise writing, printing, and typing skills; demonstrated ability to follow strict procedures/protocols; demonstrated excellent and accurate data collection, data entry, data recording, and reporting of research data; requires bending, squatting, climbing stairs; pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds; reaching shoulder level and below; sitting, standing, walking, waist twisting, kneeling, crawling; carrying/lifting 20 pounds; gripping/grasping; repetitive hand and arm movements of upper extremities; may be exposed to chemicals or toxic substances; latex; dust, fumes or e: Fingerprinting and background check required.
