The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to provide technical assistance for basic research in immunology techniques, by performing basic tissue culture techniques and maintaining concise and complete written/computer records of experimental protocols and data.
KEY FUNCTIONS
1. Tissue Culture: Maintains and establishes tissue culture cell lines, which requires good sterile technique and ability to determine cell counts and cell viability using microscope and hemocytometer. Prepares sterile media and solutions. Monitors, orders and shelves tissue culture supplies. Prepares cells for cryogenic storage and subsequent re-establishment of viable cell lines. Packs and mails cell lines to collaborators using dry ice. Tests cell lines for mycoplasma contamination. Establishes short-term cell cultures using human or mouse tissues. Some protocols require work on weekends/holidays and time away must be coordinated with other staff to ensure cell lines are maintained. Requires cultivation of viruses; must be wiling to work with infectious organisms. 2. Laboratory Animals: Successfully completes training and certification by the Department of Veterinary Medicine to handle and work with live animals, primarily mice, in a safe and humane manner, following institutional guidelines for disposal of dead animals, biohazards and used needles 3. Basic Techniques in Molecular Biology: Perform basic molecular biology techniques in manipulation of DNA, RNA and protein. Requires techniques for handling chemicals and low-level radioisotopes, and requires ability to calculate molarity and accurately prepare media solutions and reagents, using a pH meter, balances, electrophoresis apparatus, and the use of acids, polyacrylamide solutions, flammable materials and other biohazards, according to institutional safety policies. 4. Record Keeping and Maintenance of Lab: Maintains detailed written reports of experimental data and protocols, communicating results and/or potential problems with experiments to supervisor. Maintains lab work area and lab equipment, monitoring it daily to ensure the lab operates safely, is clean, and all equipment is in good working order; understands correct operation of all lab equipment, and follows written instructions/operations manuals. Performs bi-weekly wipe tests and coordinates radioactive waste disposal. Interacts with repair personnel and supply vendors. 5. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION

Required: Two years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree
Preferred: Two years of experience in scientific or experimental research work, part of which needs to involve cell culture work. Previous exposure to molecular biology, rodent handling and flow cytometry are desirable.
