ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Prepares and dispenses laboratory diet and drinking water according to specific instructions to a variety of animal species. May perform basic animal husbandry duties. May observes animal behavior and health status. Prepares and uses disinfectants and detergents. Operates cage washer and autoclaves. Records daily animal inventories. Transports animals, feed, and bedding within the research facility. Performs maintenance and repair of equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provides skills in the care of feeding, watering and handling of animals. Prepares special diets, restrains animals, and reports changes in animal behavior and appearance. Maintains feed stock and supplies, inspects animal rooms for sanitation, proper operation of watering devices, and the condition of animals. Checks feed for compliance with quality control standards, monitors quarantine area and provides general husbandry. May provide husbandry for projects involving specialized handling techniques requiring personal protective equipment and primary containment devices.
EDUCATION:
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Administers anesthetic agents, intramuscular and intravenous injections while supervised. Provides miscellaneous technical service support for various research activities that may include clinical and surgical support, biologics and tissue collection. Monitors animals for evidence of disease or trauma from procedures. Assists in necropsies; submits histological material to diagnostic laboratory for tissue process and other laboratory procedures as directed. Provides husbandry in specialized animal areas requiring personal protective equipment and primary containment devices.
EDUCATION:
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Three years of animal care experience to include experience in specialized housing techniques.

Animal Resource Technologist
Salary Range: $27,200 - $40,800
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provides advanced technical assistance for veterinary clinic, radiology and surgery under the general direction of the veterinary staff. Provides one or more of the following services including providing technical guidance for Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) barrier animal colonies infectious diseases wards, and isolation units, providing maintenance and development of inbred, hybrid, or other specialty breeding colonies, collecting blood samples, administers blood transfusions, medications, intravenous anesthesia, and resuscitation, operating x-ray or imaging unit and/or assisting in the daily operation of animal clinic or surgical unit. Trains and assists investigators and their technicians in animal related technical manipulations. Performs animal husbandry skills in clinics and in other animal areas as needed. Performs animal enrichment as needed. Maintains record systems. Trains and may direct activities of Animal Technicians.
EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree in a Biological Science.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: No experience with required degree. May substitute required education degree with equivalent experience on a one to one basis. With substitution, one additional year of animal care experience in a lead capacity is required.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Required: American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technician Certification within 180 days of eligibility.

Salary Range: $31,200 - $46,800
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assists in surgical procedures under the general supervision of the veterinary staff. May administer and/or monitor anesthesia under the general supervision of the veterinary staff. Assists the veterinarian in providing daily routine care and/or treatments of the animals. Maintains clinical and surgical records. Orders drugs, supplies and equipment. Maintains equipment and supply inventories. May provide maintenance and development of inbred, hybrid, or other specialty breeding colonies. May collect genotyping samples and maintain records and tissue archives as required. Provides training to investigators and their staff as needed. Performs animal enrichment as needed. May supervise personnel assigned to area.
EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree in biological science.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Three years experience in clinical or surgical animal procedures or supervisory/team lead experience to include experience in animal healthcare and husbandry. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Required: Bastrop and Smithville require American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist certification within 180 days of eligibility.
Houston requires American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technician certification within 180 days of eligibility.

Supervisor, Animal Resources

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Coordinates, supervises and reviews all operations in assigned area. Plans work schedules, distributes workload and assists veterinarians in the management and restraint of animals during treatment and/or procedures. Maintains comprehensive records. Assists investigators in minor procedures. Participates in the hiring of new personnel and assists in their training and guidance. Ensures all users of the animal facility follow standard operating procedures. Maintains attendance records, and performs evaluations. Trains, coaches and monitors direct reports on technical and operational functions, policies and procedures. Participates in compliance functions with the manager and staff veterinarian such as Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) site inspections.
MARGINAL OR PERIODIC FUNCTIONS:
Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION:Received: Manager or Supervisor.
Given: Assigned staff.
EDUCATION:Required: Bachelor's degree in a Biological Science.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Biomedical or Animal Science.
EXPERIENCE:Required:
None. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis with one year of supervisory/team lead experience in animal care.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Required: Must meet department American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification requirements.
Preferred: Houston prefers American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist Certification.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Contact with a variety of animals, with possibility of animal bites or scratches. Possible handling of/protected exposure to animals or associated materials that have been exposed to biohazardous agents such as carcinogens, radioactive substances, or infectious organisms.
