Professional, Missoula County. Rural Landscape Scientist, $18.97/hour w/excellent benefits. Missoula County Rural Initiatives is seeking a Natural Resources Scientist to fill an important position in Rural Initiatives. Missoula County is home to several threatened and endangered species as well as rural farm, ranch and timber communities. Numerous blue ribbon trout streams, several wilderness areas, vibrant urban and rural communities and a dedicated open lands citizen advisory committee help comprise Missoula County. Rural Initiatives is charged with planning and policy measures designed to protect the cultural, historic, economic and natural resources of the County while providing for and directing growth outside the Missoula Valley. The individual chosen will play a significant role in objectively presenting accurate, credible and scientifically sound information to policy makers who must often weigh competing values when making land use decisions. The position requires good social skills and an understanding of the benefits of community-based decision making in order to work effectively to build partnerships with elected officials; landowners; tribal, state and federal agencies; and non-governmental organizations. Doing so requires flexibility and creativity, while maintaining credibility as an objective scientist. Specific projects and duties may include, but not be limited to: providing recommendations to decision-makers regarding land use proposals such as zoning or subdivision plans, representing Missoula County on various committees that seek to collaborate on protection or restoration of natural resources and/or rural communities. A Master 's of Science degree related to Wildlife Biology, Natural Resource Management/Policy, Forestry, or Environmental Studies required. At least 2 years experience involving biological and/or social research, data analysis and report writing required. Experience in building partnerships with rural landowners and/or community-based organizations desired. An understanding of the application of GIS in land use planning and scientific research necessary and technical GIS skills a plus. Base salary is $18.97/hr. with excellent benefits package.
