Staff Research Associate II Category: Research Facility: Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute Department: Research Schedule: Full Time Shift: Day Shift Hours: tbd Job Details: Staff Research Associate (Level II) with skills in molecular and cell biology, andgenetics, to assist with a project investigating the role of candidate genes in the development of obesity and Type-2diabetes in mouse models. Technical requirements include managing a mouse breeding colony, including taking tailsnips for genotyping, setting up breeding pairs and careful record keeping. Required analytical skills include: DNAextraction and quantitation, genotyping using PCR-based methods, mRNA isolation and preparation of cDNA libraries,and normalized total RNA libraries, qPCR for accessing transcript levels, and experience with cell culture and cellbasedassays. Independence, the ability to troubleshoot and critically analyze and present data, and a serious work ethicand interest in learning, are required traits for the position. The Staff Research Associate II will develop and carry out research projects independently with guidance from PI and assistance from others (Postdoctoral Fellows and Lab Supervisor) in the lab when appropriate. Perform a variety of laboratory techniques including cloning, PCR, Westerns, cell culture, PAGE, protein purification and expression in mammalian as well as prokaryotic systems. Duties also include travel to off-site locations to participate in research studies that entail obtaining materials such as human sera, tears, tissue and administering non-laboratory aspects of research projects. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Minimum Education and Experience: Current enrollment in a graduate program of an applicable natural science or related professional field such as medical or nursing school. BA/BS with a major in an applicable natural science is recommended. Previous research experience is recommended but not required. Knowledge/Skills: Incumbent will have amassed significant knowledge related to the research program and will evidence a sophisticated understanding of the theoretical principles related to the scientific field of interest. Performs a wide variety of routine laboratory procedures as described in "Primary Purpose" and highly adaptable to special and changing needs of research.
