Req Number 36946BR Job Title Staff Research Associate III Job Code and Payroll Title 9611: STAFF RESEARCH ASSOC III Job Code and Payroll Title 9611 STAFF RESEARCH ASSOC III Location Mount Zion Department Name Pathology Work Days Monday - Friday 8:00 - 5:00 Shift Days Shift Length 8 Hours Job Summary The Department of Pathology is a major academic department in the School of Medicine, actively engaged in clinical, research and teaching activities, and is directly responsible for over 350 academic, student, and staff personnel at multiple sites (Parnassus, Mount Zion, China Basin, Mission Bay, MCB, SFGH and VAMC). The Department also has joint responsibility with the Medical Center in overseeing Pathology clinical operations which consists of: Surgical Pathology (Gross-Cutting Labs, IPOX Lab, Histology Lab), Autopsy, Cytopathology, Neuropathology, Renal/EM Pathology, and Molecular Pathology. The Department also manages the independent Dermatopathology service. This position provides research assistance in the Specialty Lab of UCSF Dermatopathology Service with projects that will help develop and validate new tests for skin diseases. The incumbent will use a variety of molecular and cell biology techniques including PCR (polymerase chain reaction), quantitative RT PCR, FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization), aCGH (array Comparative Genomic Hybridization), fragment analysis and sequencing approaches including next-generation sequencing. The incumbent will be involved in exploring and assessing new technologies, developing and validating assays, performing quality control procedures and evaluating results and resolving minor technical problems in the lab. This position will also need to support activities required for TJC (The Joint Commission accreditation by assisting in updating lab manuals. Required Qualifications BA/BS with a degree in a related science and two or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; 5 years experience with practical experience in molecular biology and/or genetics; familiarity with software for genomic analysis; excellent oral and written communication skills; able to lift 20 pounds and carry/push/pull over 60 pounds. Preferred Qualifications Experience with molecular diagnostics; California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license; experience with library construction for next-generation sequencing platforms.
