Position Description
The Strategic Sourcing Director has the overall responsibility for developing and implementing strategic sourcing standard work that optimizes Surgical Technologies' Supply Base and improves and aligns the Sector's procurement processes. Utilize category strategies and processes to develop sector and MDT preferred Suppliers to leverage best cost, technical capabilities, innovation, supplier diversity, and quality improvement; including Finance, R&D, Sales & Marketing, Human Resources, Corporate Supply Management, Quality, and, Operations management. Represent Surgical Technologies on MDT Supply Councils, Medtronic Supply Teams, and MDT Global Sourcing Leadership Staff.
Position Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
Develops 5 year Strategic Sourcing Plan. Tracks progress via sourcing maturity models such as the MDT Process Survey Tool or other benchmarks. Works with upper management to execute Sourcing Plan into Policy Deployment. Leads, manages, and organizes semi-annual Sector Strategic Sourcing meeting and its resultant implementation plans. Partner and manages the Strategic Indirect Spend reduction projects, processes, initiatives, and validation of savings with Finance. Leads development, deployment, and compliance monitoring to Sector Standard Operating Procedures, MDT Corporate Policies, and MDT standard work processes such as, but not limited to, Risk Management, Supplier Segmentation, Talent Development, Supplier Selection, and Supplier NPD Integration. Strategically manages major Sector (multi site) /MDT shared Suppliers. Owns the compilation and publication of the Sector Direct Supplier Management Scorecard to include, but not limited to: Critical Quality Control Plans, Supplier Continuity & Risk Management reduction, Supplier Consolidation, and Direct Material Cost reduction. Aligns and develops Strategic Sourcing resources across the Sector. Compiles, maintains, and issues Sector policy compliance scorecards for P-Card, OneSource, and Competitive bid utilization, and others as required by the five year plan. Maintains with Finance the Sector Supplier Related Material Cost savings prioritization, tracking, and validation process. Sponsors or leads DMAIC, Kaizen, Sourcing related rapid improvement events. Provides overall leadership in achieving results. Performs supply chain due diligence and post integration supply base optimization as a part of the business acquisition process. Complies with site Quality Systems.
Cross-Functional Alignment
Work closely with Supplier Quality functions, Operations, Engineering, Marketing, Legal and Product Development to create a sourcing strategy to enable growth while reducing cost of sales. Partner with ST planning organization to ensure planning and sourcing strategies effectively tie together and deliver significant results. Participate as a member of the Supply Chain management team to drive overall ST and Medtronic results. Partner with tactical purchasing at each site in the development, implementation and adherence to overall strategy and process execution. Work closely with other divisions and Corporate on company wide initiatives as well as including One Medtronic. Will also align with and execute cross company sourcing strategies.
Process Development
Improve overall sourcing processes and drive supplier performance initiatives to support business and functional objectives. Develop strong supplier processes related to product development, supplier selection and supplier qualification. Design a proactive process for supplier selection, management, monitoring and development. Drive stronger engagement with Research and Development to ensure disciplined approaches and processes with supplier and material selection occur.
Strategy & Execution
Develop vision and strategies for Supply Management to ensure continuity of supply and position sourcing as a competitive advantage for ST, while creating more partnership arrangements. Develop and align commodity strategies across the Surgical Technologies Sector. Develop supply base rationalization strategy & implementation roadmap; ensure supply base is capable of handling increasing demand. Develop strategic framework for sole and single source supply base. Lead strategic planning efforts for sourcing around Operations strategic plan & AOP.
Organizational Development
Create a world class sourcing organization, continually upgrading the caliber of talent, and ensuring effective training, development and talent management systems are in place. Lead functional transformation initiatives to drive step function improvements in cost, efficiency, speed and execution. Work with our supply partners to establish a culture of continuous improvement. Partner with suppliers to achieve improvements in quality, lead times and cost. Apply Supplier Development processes and tools to facilitate improvement in process capabilities that will enable suppliers to meet critical operational objectives and a continued partnership with Medtronic.
Basic Qualifications
10 - 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor's Degree. 8 - 13 years of experience with a Master's Degree. 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in Purchasing and Supplier Management in a Lean Sigma environment. Knowledge and understanding of supply chain management, strategic sourcing, inventory management, and contract law. Solid experience in a highly technical & regulated industry. Proven negotiation skills.

Must have a strong working knowledge of the latest supply chain management techniques and familiarity with Lean Sigma. Experience and effectiveness in leading cross-functional teams. Must have excellent organizational, project management skills to be able to prioritize and delegate tasks effectively and be able to work with little or no supervision. Must have highly developed negotiating skills. Proficient with Microsoft, Excel & Word and other PC applications.
