TRUCK OPERATOR/ELECTRICIAN ASSISTANT - Transmission Substation Construction
NOTE: We are anticipating filling several vacancies in early 2014 - we are actively sourcing and beginning the hiring process now for these positions.
Truck Operators assist in theconstruction of Transmission substations throughout the state of Georgia. This includes building foundations, steel structures, truck operation, and ground help. This position is part of astatewide, traveling construction crewresponsible for constructing new and replacing existing transmission structures and facilities. This is aphysically demanding position that requires heavy manual labor. This position works four, ten-hour days and requires overnight and out-of-town stays during the week near the construction site (this means you could be away from home as many as 200 overnights per year).Travel expenses, hotel expenses and meals are the responsibility of the Truck Operator and a per diem (daily allowance paid by the day) is provided to help cover these costs. This position is covered under the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84 which includes an increase every six months until you max out in your job classification and a cost of living increase every July. This position is subject to call-out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Training or experience in industrial maintenance or construction is highly desired.
Experience working outdoors in a labor intensive occupation is also a plus.
Experience in a physically demanding work environment and ability to work with all types of tools is desired.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
Training or experience in industrial maintenance or construction is a plus. Familiarity with heavy machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting and industrial maintenance or construction.
Candidates should have a basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or a demonstrated aptitude for either.
Experience wiring relaying control schemes is a plus.
Experience with AC and DC wiring for low voltage systems.
Installation/termination of control wiring for communication, protective, and control schemes preferred.
Ability to reach and understand wiring schematics strongly preferred.
All candidates must enjoy working outdoors in a physically demanding environment.

Ability to work at extreme (60 - 200 feet) height is essential to succeed in this position.
All construction jobs require extended overnight stays and travel throughout the state of Georgia. You could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must currently have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be able to attain a CDL within 6 months of employment. Valid CDL Permit is strongly preferred (prior to hire). Note: Any candidate who currently holds a CDL will require verification with current and past employers upon job offer.
To be considered for an interview, candidates must pass a pre-employment CAST test (basic mechanical aptitude), a Customer Value Assessment and a Physical Abilities Test. A thorough background check, drug screening including a nicotine test, DOT Physical and Worker's Compensation Questionnaire will be required prior to employment
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
Truck Operators will have the opportunity to bid intoApprentice Electrician positions in Substation Constructionprovided all the necessary prerequisites are met which includes qualification on the required tests.
Apprentice Electricians in Construction will undergo an extensive training program, including classroom, skills, and on-the-job training. The training program lasts approximately 3 to 3 1/2 years. Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Electrician positions, as they become available.
Georgia Power Company has classified this position as "Safety Sensitive" and as such is subject to relevant pre-employment screening(s) to determine fitness for duty.
Any offer of employment is contingent upon the applicant successfully completing all required fitness assessments.
Must be available to work assigned storm duty, which could include evenings, weekends, holidays and overnight travel.
Must understand the value of customer service and support.
