Marketing Communications

The specialty of developing programs that market an organization's products or services. Marketing communications specialists may develop or oversee the creation of press releases, blogs, television and radio advertisements, brochures, catalogues, fact sheets and other materials. They also utilize social media and websites to promote their companies and their products. Marketing communications specialists may conduct market research to develop effective marketing campaigns. They may also provide marketing information to other employees within the company and coordinate marketing campaigns with other departments within their company. Marketing communications specialists are typically part of a larger marketing team and report to a director or manager.

Marketing communications specialist positions typically require a bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communications, English or in the employer's area of expertise. These positions may also require previous marketing or other applicable experience. Some industries or positions may require a master's degree in business, marketing or journalism.

Marketing communications specialists must be creative and able to work independently, while also able to take direction as needed. They must prioritize tasks, be organized, and remain flexible as market conditions and needs change. They must have excellent analytical skills. They also need excellent communications skills and should be comfortable with public speaking. Computer experience is required, and they should be familiar with desktop publishing software, website development, and blogging. Typically, marketing communications specialists work Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays off, although this is subject to change depending on business requirements. A 40-hour working week is typical, although more hours may be required at times. They may also be required to represent their company at trade shows and other company events, which may require evening or weekend hours.
