Supervisory Medical Technologist / Medical Technologist

During my •••••+ year tenure at the VAMC-St. Louis Clinical Laboratory I was a very responsible and highly respected and trusted member of the laboratory team. I worked in almost all of the laboratory sections. My last ••••• years were in the Transfusion Service (Blood Bank) with my retiring as the Blood Bank supervisor and being responsible for the Molecular Diagnostics/PCR Laboratory. As the Blood Bank supervisor I objectively supervised and communicated with many individuals of varying backgrounds while adhering to EEO guidelines and the local union agreements. I was able to effectively analyze complex problems and situations to reach a practical and reasonable solution. I was responsible for adhering to the respective requirements of these regulatory/accrediting agencies: CAP (College of American Pathologist), JCAHO (Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals Organization), OSHA and the FDA.
I prepared budgetary projections for section supply/instrument needs and tried to conserve resources where feasible while maintaining the section budget. I also compiled quarterly reports on all sections credit card usage and reported to the laboratory manager.
I developed and wrote all the procedures for the PCR lab (Viral Load for HIV and HCV) and trained others in this difficult and demanding technique. I also evaluated and adopted new testing procedures when suitable to the respective section and established quality control measures.
Prior to this assignment I worked in Coagulation (3 years collaterally with Blood Bank),
Microbiology (1 year), Urinalysis (3 years) and Immunology/Serology (••••• years) which I ran almost
independently. I had knowledge and experience in the manual and automated testing techniques of

all of these laboratory sections. I have written many test procedures pertaining to each department. While in the Immunology /Serology Department I wrote the entire procedure manual, developed new tests in response to customers needs (e.g. the Nutrition Panel to assist dieticians in assessing patients on TPN (Total Parental Nutrition), discovered a rise in positive syphilis cases and assisted the Infection Control staff by explaining the intricacies of this issue to the medical staff at the Jefferson Barracks Division where most of the cases arose. I was also responsible for procuring all necessary supplies in Immunology and carried this responsibility into my assignment in the Blood Bank and Molecular Diagnostic laboratories. In addition to my normal Blood Bank duties and supply responsibilities I also determined overall laboratory expenditures on a per section quarterly basis.
My self-taught computer skills assisted in the Blood Bank winning the Team of The Month for our on-line information Homepage in September •••••
I was a Controlled Substance and Alcohols Inspector for the hospital for over 2 years and wrote reports pertaining to those inspections.
