RESUME
QUALIFICATION OF MY RESEARCH CAREER
I was born on October •••••th, ••••• in the city of Enschede, the Netherlands. My initial research as an experimental psychologist focused on laboratory and questionnaire studies in humans. By the time I turned PhD (•••••), my interest in biomedical science had grown to a point where I decided to seek additional science training, culminating in an MSc degree in pharmacology. After moving to the United States, my research activity has been intense, but intermittent, because of visa-related procedures. I am motivated to develop my career researching obesity and associated pathology.
EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
Post-Doctoral Fellowship #2
Oct ••••• present, Apr ••••• - March •••••
Affiliation: Dept. of Medicine, University of Washingto
Mentor: Prof. David E. Cummings, MD
Activities:
- Developed two chronic surgical models to study physiology in conscious rats: double cannulations (jugular vein - small intestinal, and jugular vein - 3rd intracerebroventricular). Identified a role for the following factors in meal-related ghrelin suppression: macronutrient type, duodenum and jejunum, intestinal hyperosmolarity, peripheral neural activation, and brain insulin.
- Established mouse laboratory for round-the-clock monitoring of food and fluid intake. Used this set-up to phenotype ghrelin-receptor knockout mice and to test behavioral effects of ghrelin-receptor antagonist drugs.
- Developed several custom-made computer programs for automated analysis of meal patterns (solid and liquid food) in rodents. Software currently in use by Animal Physiology Core Facility (Prof. M.W. Schwartz, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Dept. of Medicine, UW).
- Managed in-house breeding program to produce ghrelin-receptor knockout mice with uniform C•••••B6/J genetic background.
- Assessed of glucose counterregulation in mice lacking the ghrelin receptor.

- Tutored PhD student
Post-doctoral Fellowship # 1
July ••••• - July •••••
Affiliation: Weill Medical College, Cornell University, White Plains, New York.•••••
Mentor: Prof. James G. Gibbs, MD
Activities:
- Chronic infusions of satiety peptides (GRP, CCK, GLP•••••) in chronically v. cava cannulated rats and their effect on food intake
- Effects of ip CCK8 and CCK••••• on intermeal interval in rats
- Set up laboratory for round-the-clock automated food intake measurement in bombesin receptor subtype••••• knockout and wildtype mice
- Designed software for automatic analysis of mouse meal patterns, and automatically processing of food weights on digital scales by computer.
MSc Degree in Pharmacology
Sept ••••• - Nov •••••
School of Pharmacy, University of Bradford, UK
Mentor: M.E. Kelly, PhD
Activities:
- Masters thesis: Conditioned place preference and exploratory behaviour in the rat
- Side job as external lecturer at Dept. of Nursing Sciences, University of Bradford: Statistical analyses questionnaires, tutoring of PhD students, lecturing in introductory psychology for nursing science students.
PhD in Experimental Psychology•••••
•••••
University of Maastricht•••••
Mentors: Prof. Anita Jansen, PhD; Prof. Marcel van den Hout, PhD
Activities:
- Doctoral Dissertation: Pavlovian Conditioning and Binge Eating in humans
- Psychophysiologic responsivity, i.e., galvanic skin response, startle reflex, facial EMG to food-related stimuli in humans
- Pavlovian conditioning in humans of insulin and blood glucose responses
